We could dedicate this page to telling you “About Us,” but let’s be honest—you already know who we are.

Instead, the question we get asked the most is: “Why Mexico City?!”

 

Sure, it’s got romantic architecture, vibrant culture, and unbelievably good food—but for us, it’s more than a destination. It’s the heart of the dog rescue community that changed our lives.

Just outside Mexico City is the Funkytown Puebla Dog Shelter, where many of the dogs rescued by Save Our Scruff come from. Through this incredible organization, we’ve fostered 8 dogs, 5 of whom were from Funkytown. We've also had the privilege of volunteering as Flight Parents—helping dogs make the journey from Mexico to their forever homes in Canada.

That’s how Gaviota came to us.

Gaviota was abandoned by her family and spent seven days sleeping outside the only home she had ever known. She was eventually rescued by Funkytown, but because of her late-stage kidney disease, her chances of being adopted in Mexico were slim. Thanks to her dedicated Flight Parent, she flew to Canada and was placed with Nimisha as a foster. About a month later—on July 21, 2022—Nimisha officially adopted her. Coincidentally (or maybe fatefully), it was also the day of Nimisha’s first date with Sanish.

Not long after, Gaviota's adoption certificate was updated to include Sanish and we were a family of three.

Gaviota was sweet, soulful, and a little bit stubborn—in all the best ways. She quickly became the heart of our home. She passed in September 2023, just over a year after her adoption. We're comforted knowing that in her final chapter, she was surrounded by love, warmth, and safety. We like to think it was the best year of her life. We know it was one of the best of ours.

Since then, we’ve continued fostering rescue dogs and have volunteered as Flight Parents. It’s one of the most meaningful things we’ve done together—and it’s why we chose to celebrate our wedding in the place where it all began.
